Live duration is rather straight forward: it's randomly varied from Senza rubato (+- 1 %) to Molto rubato (-4 % to +8 %).
The Rubato alternatives are randomly varying Live start position and Live duration, except for Meccanico which does not modify the default values (which for duration are dependent on the % setting of unslurred notes). There does not seem to be any intelligence behind the volume variations - they are truly random. Roughly it seems that Poco espressivo has a range of about +-10 %, Espressivo +-25 % and Molto espressivo +- 30-40 %. The Espressivo alternatives Meccanico and Senza espressivo does nothing (meaning that the volume is a constant for each set value ppp-fff) and Poco espressivo, Espressivo and Molto espressivo randomly alters the volume from the set value, note for note. It seems that Espressivo modifies the Live velocity only and Rubato modifies Live duration and Live start position only, so why not write that? I have several comments and questions regarding these results.įirst the Espressivo and Rubato subheadings of Style are not well chosen. Using the Inspector I can then study the resulting values of Live velocity, Live start position and Live duration, which I must assume are the result of the Sibelius Live playback feature. To better understand how this part of Sibelius works I then export MID-files with different combinations of these settings and then import them again into Sibelius. In the Play|Performance menu I use 80% duration on unslurred notes and test different setting of Espressivo and Rubato.
To experiment I use a certain orchestra piece with Live playback on and no manually entered values for velocity, startposition and duration. I'm trying to optimize my audio export files, which I want (of course) to sound as "live" as possible.
